Vibrant Works’ Israel Bolivar named National Peter J. Salmon Employee of the Year Award Recipient

We’re thrilled to share that Israel Bolivar, our Vibrant Works Employee of the Year, has also been named the 2025 Peter J. Salmon National Employee of the Year by National Industries for the Blind (NIB).

This prestigious national honor, established in 1968, recognizes employees who are blind and employed in direct labor roles at NIB-associated nonprofit agencies. Israel was selected from among 42 nominees across the country, a testament to his perseverance, strong work ethic, and leadership.

The surprise announcement was made today during a special event at Vibrant Works by President and CEO Cindy Watson and VP of Services Tiffany Walker. As everyone clapped and cheered, Israel was visibly moved, and even more surprised when he was presented with a $500 check in celebration of his achievement!

“You truly are an inspiration to all of us,” said Cindy. “In the history of this award, San Antonio Lighthouse, now Vibrant Works, has only received it once before. To have this opportunity is uniquely special and a proud moment. Thank you, Israel, for putting us on the national stage and celebrate the great work that’s done here in San Antonio.”

Israel was also recognized with a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Joaquin Castro’s office, honoring his outstanding and invaluable service to the community.

Israel’s journey is nothing short of remarkable. After losing his sight and both hands at the age of five due to an accident in his native country of Colombia, he spent months in a coma and underwent numerous surgeries. He later moved to Florida, where he attended the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology, and in 2019 made the brave decision to relocate to San Antonio to join Vibrant Works in search of meaningful employment.

Today, Israel thrives as a full-time sander, finishing floorboards for the KC-135 military aircraft, a role in which he consistently brings positivity, leadership and dedication to his team.

“I want to thank everyone who gave me a chance and never gave up on me,” Israel said. “All my teammates were always there to stand next to me when I needed help. I appreciate Vibrant Works for supporting me, even in moments when I didn’t think I could do it, they were there. It feels amazing to represent the company that gave me a chance to achieve my goals.”

“He is my hero. I’m so proud of him,” added his wife, Evelyn, who also works at Vibrant Works.

Israel will formally receive his award at the NIB Training Conference and Expo in Washington, D.C., in February 2026.

We are beyond proud of Israel and all that he represents. Please join us in celebrating his incredible achievement!
